- Bakumatsu literally translates to "end of the curtain."
- This was the period of time between 1853 and 1867 in which Japan evolved from a feudal shogunate to the Meiji government
- Unlike the French and American revolutions Japan's revolt was mostly small battles that took power from the shogunate.
- Bakumatsu was a period of leniant government, the time period while Japan was slowly changing its policies.
- After Bakumatsu and the end of the shogunate came the Meji period.
