- Japan and Russia were in a war for about a year from 1904-1905
- It was the first great war of the 1900's and was caused because the two countries wanted territories in Korea and Manchuria
- Although it is categorized as one war there were many battles during the Russo-Japan War
- There was the Battle of Port Arthur, Battle of the Yellow Sea, Battle of Sandepu, Battle of Mukden, and the Battle of Tsushima to name a few
- These battles and more killed about 80,000 people from both sides
- Japan ended up winning but because some of the Japanese people did not like the treaty terms that ended the war, they rioted
- they won a war against the superpower army of Russia despite the fact that they had less time to prepare
- In 44 years Japan advanced 2,000 years in technology, weaponry, and government policies
- The current emperor of Japan is Akihito, he is the 125th emperor
- Japan is one of the longest surviving countries dating back to the 14,000's B.C in the Jōmon Period
- People in Japan live about 4 years longer than Americans on average
