During the Meiji period the samurai status was taken from them and being a force of above 1.9 million,
outrage was imminent.
a. The samurai rights were revoked;
such as, the right to bear arms, low
taxation in return for military assistance,
and high status in the class hierarchy.
b. This started riots and rebellions, and
one famous rebellion, the satsuma
rebellion which turned into a civil war.
c. The war wasn't won it was more
reconciled, and this was the last violent
outburst regarding political freedoms.
This was another large push for political
reforms. Another big push was
Commodore Perry, who brought the idea
of western civilization to japan.
Commodore Matthew C. Perry (Yes, Matthew Perry is his name) was a US Navy commander, who traveled to Japan in hopes to open their ports to international trade.
Within the Meiji period Japan advanced to catch up to western civilization.
