  • Ninjas emerged in during the Edo period
  • The Ninjas specialized in unorthodox warfare, as apposed to the samurai  who observed strict rules about honor in combat
  • The technique they used in combat was stealth and very secretive
  • Ninjas did not just learn how to use weapons and fight, they learned philosophy, astrology, and military strategy
  • A collection of these teachings (ninja knowledge), written in 1676, is known as the Bansenshukai
  • In 1853 and 1854 Commodore Perry consistently pressured Japan to end it's isolationist policies (instated by Tokugawa Lemitsu in 1639) by pressuring open ports to European and international trade,
  • This wasn't entirely successful until the Meiji Restoration.
