- This period occurred from 1868-1912.
- This period represents the bridge between and issolated feudalism to Japan's modern form.
- Meiji translates to enlightened rule.
- The first reform of the Meiji period was the "Five Charter Oath" which is very similar to the American Bill of Rights
Meiji Period
- Deliberative assembly's shall be widely established and all matters decided by open discussion.
- All classes, high and low, shall be united vigorously carrying out the administration of affairs of state.
- The common people, no less than the civil and military officials, shall be allowed to pursue their own calling so that there be no discontent.
- Evil customs of the past shall be broken off, and everything based upon the just laws of nature.
- Knowledge shall be sought throught the world so as to strengthen the foundation of imperial rule.
